The Neumann Girls basketball team captured their first PIAA District Championship. For the Lady Knights, this season has been a season of firsts. The Lady Knights had the most wins of any previous season with a record of 22-4, breaking their previous record.
The Lady Knights suffered a slow first half in the district championship game, only being up by 4 points.
During the 3rd quarter, they took off with a 17-0 run during the 3rd quarter. Coming into the 4th quarter they knew they needed to defend their lead.
Neumann lost last year after a 13 point lead in the 3rd quarter but they learned and fought back this year to win it all. The Knights will face off against High Point Baptist this Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m. at the Catholic Community Center at St. John Neumann High School.
The boy’s team lost a thrilling game 49-48 to the Muncy Indians last Wednesday night for the District Championship, but will still compete in state’s. The Knights tried to take back a victory after losing to Muncy in the district championship last year.
The game was full of excitement with both teams gaining large leads over the other. At the end of the first quarter, Neumann gained a lead of 14-9 lead by Tyrick Moy and Messiah Baldwin with a combined 12 out of 14 points.
Halfway through the second quarter the Knights fell behind with 25-16 but they rallied back 25-22 at the half.
The second half was no less exciting than the first with just 1 minutes 02 seconds left in the game made a three pointer to bring Neumann backup 47-46 in the game and after a basket by Muncy and steal by LaJon Dizard to put the Knights up 48-47 with 38 seconds to give the Knights their final lead.
The Muncy Indians then went on to score two free throws to finish the game. The Knights fell to the Muncy for the second straight year in the district 4 championship. The Knights will face Lancaster Mennonite this Saturday March 9 in Lancaster at 1:30 p.m.
